How can stem cells be obtained?
The simplest way to obtain stem cells is to use the umbilical cord blood at birth.
Stem cells can also be isolated from the body of healthy adults using their bone marrow or peripheral blood, but – on the one hand – these interventions may lead to complications and – on the other hand – these stem cells are older and, consequently, are less effective in the case of various treatments as compared to stem cells derived form newborn babies, at birth.
Collection of umbilical cord blood and cord tissue is easy process and does NOT cause any pain and does NOT represent health risks either for the mother or for the baby.
